With The X Factor now wrapped for the season, Demi Lovato was free to hit the studio and let her emotions for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings run free, via a new recording. The 20-year-old singer covered country band Alamaba‘s 1993 Christmas single “Angels Among Us” in honor of the 26 who lost their lives in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday, December 14.

“We can never imagine what the families in Newtown, Connecticut are experiencing right now,” says a message at the beginning of the video, before Demi appears, singing among scores of lit candles. “And while there is nothing we can do to replace their loss, we can stand together and support them during this difficult time. This song is in honor of those angels we lost on December 14.”

Altogether, 20 children and six adults were shot and killed on December 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Lovato tweeted out the link to the above video and a link to wearenewtown.org on Christmas Day, and simply wrote, “Thinking of the families in Newtown.”
