One Direction ran France for the evening, as the group won one of the biggest awards last night (January 26th) at the 2013 NRJ Music Awards. The ceremony, held at the Palais De Festivals in Cannes, had a bevy of talent to choose from for their Best International Group or Duo of the Year award: Among the nominees were Maroon 5, Carly Rae Jepsen, Coldplay, Owl City and — of course! — 1D.

But the UK boys took it home, with their mouthpiece Harry Styles thanking the French crowd for loving them despite a glaring language barrier. “We don’t speak French. Obviously, we weren’t born here,” he said in his acceptance speech. “To be welcomed in this country is amazing, so thank you so much.” 1D also performed “Kiss You” for screaming fans, and even had time for a costume change. Their versatility never ends.

Other winners included Carly Rae Jepsen for International Breakthrough of the Year, Rihanna for International Female Artist of the Year, and Bruno Mars for International Male Artist of the Year. The biggest winner though (strangely) was PSY, whose “Gangnam Style” won International Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year; Psy himself receiving the NRJ Award of Honor. The French are known for their taste.
