Michelle Williams Talks Destiny’s Child Super Bowl Performance & Recording “Nuclear”

Oh, Michelle Williams. The public hasn’t been particularly kind to the erstwhile Destiny’s Child songbird lately (cc: Poor Michelle), but in a new interview with Billboard, the songbird says that she wasn’t bothered by the reaction to the girls’ Super Bowl performance — because it was all about having fun!

“When three good girlfriends are together,” Williams explained, “you’re free and you don’t care who’s around; you’re just trying to catch up and be goofy. I had a blast. People at home watching… they don’t catch the moments where, like in the Charlie’s Angels pose, I was smiling. We were all smiling. I was laughing with my girls. I don’t care what anybody else says. I don’t let it get me down. It was a beautiful thing.”

Well, good! Good, Michelle. Don’t let the haters drag you. We believe in your true star.

As for the new Destiny’s Child recording “Nuclear,” Williams admitted that the song came together in rather short order. (Presumably, Beyonce had more important things to do.) “We had to hurry up and get it done, but it was fun,” she said. “Layering our vocals on top of each other again, we were like, ‘Oh my God…!’ Beyonce was like, ‘Man, we sound good together,’ and I was like, ‘Du-uh!’ That’s what we do.”

But as Williams returns to the studio to continue working on her own solo music, fans expecting more dawn-breaking, car-stopping and heartbreak-helloing are in for something, well, unexpected. Williams says that she’s begun recording an “inspirational/gospel project… but it sounds like an R&B/pop album… very current and contemporary.” We hope so.
