Hey! Look! Over here! It’s the video for Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “Tonight I’m Getting Over You,” an objectively faultless, scientifically-engineered-to-be-perfect pop song that probably won’t ever get the recognition it deserves because “Call Me Maybe” was too big. Ah, well.
That doesn’t change the fact that the song is an inimitable gem, and accordingly, the video fits the tone of the song quite nicely: That tension between wanting to get over someone and, well, not wanting to get over them after all. Jepsen is more sexy than cute — the way she was in “This Kiss” video, not “Call Me Maybe” — as she romps with a muscled male model type and jumps transcendently against a weird gray screen. (That part doesn’t totally make sense, but visually, it’s a nice motif, sort of.)
Mostly, it’s nice to see Jepsen doing her thing just as she should be: A little bit tortured but still sweet, and just broken enough to be lovable.
