On April 13, prior to his sold-out performance in Amsterdam, Justin Bieber visited the city’s Anne Frank House during the museum’s after-hours. According to staff, he toured the museum for more than an hour, then wrote in one of its guestbooks, “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.”

Bieber’s message, as posted on the museum’s Facebook page, has received much criticism since the Believe pop star left the museum. “She would’ve been a WHAT? That little idiot is way too full of himself. She’s an important historical figure so show some respect,” one commenter said.

An Anne Frank House spokesman has since defended Bieber’s intentions. “He’s 19, it’s a strange life he’s living, it wasn’t very sensible but he didn’t mean bad,” the spokesman said to BBC’s Anna Holligan. Check out the rest of Holligan’s Twitter report after the jump.
