Ronika’s “Rough N Soothe” Music Video: Idolator Premiere

Faithful readers, meet Ronika! The British singer-songwriter-DJ has been churning out electro-pop gems from her bedroom for a couple years, and like fellow Brit (and Idolator faveCharli XCX, she expertly straddles that blurry line between sugary pop and summery chillwave. But Ronika’s strain has a more ’80s-indebted, nouveau disco feel: listen closely, and you’ll hear hints of early Cyndi Lauper in her vocals intermingling with the sprightly squiggles of Tom Tom Club.

For her latest single “Rough N Soothe,” Ronika belts out “Come on, rough n soothe, we don’t play / I’m never gonna get in your way ” along with a breathy na-na-na hook, and the video matches that sharp/ethereal duality with bright neons obscuring ghostly VHS images of Ronika. Directed by Michael Robinson, the clip was inspired by the foam left behind after waves break on the shore. Check it out up top.

Ronika’s Rough N Soothe EP is out April 22 on Record Shop, and you can preorder it at iTunes.
