Kid Cudi Was (Understandably) Scared To Tell Kanye West He Was Leaving G.O.O.D. Music

Kid Cudi earlier this month announced he’d made the seemingly odd decision to leave G.O.O.D. Music, after Kanye West had taken the Cleveland MC under his wing for a few years and helped cultivate his career. The natural assumption was that there was some sort of rift between the two passionate, stubborn creatives. But Cudders just wanted to forge his own path, and start his own label (Wicked Awesome), so there was no beef and the split was amicable. In fact, it went over so well that Kanye still wants Cudi to come out to Paris to show him some new beats. A relieved Cudi told MTV, “Now that I know he might need my help I might go in the studio and actually try to make some beats with him in mind and see what comes outta that.”

In the days leading up to the fateful phone call with Kanye, Cudi said he was so nervous it was “the most stressful 48 hours ever.” Kind of like a teen working up the courage to call his new girlfriend and hoping that her parents don’t answer (really guys, this is how school flings used to work!).

“I wanted to make sure that when I spoke to [Kanye] he understood and I didn’t say anything that would upset him,” Cudi said. “But I was overthinking it. I was way off. When I got on the phone and talked, within the first five minutes I was like, ‘Whew.'” Kanye West: not like King Joffrey after all!
