When Chris Brown‘s father, Clinton, first met Rihanna in 2009, she was “very respectful and polite as well.” While his thoughts on the Unapologetic star haven’t changed, his opinion on their on-again, off-relationship has shifted. “I personally really didn’t want [Chris] and Rihanna back together,” Clinton Brown told the New York Daily News. “You have to have balance in a relationship. You have to have someone who is spontaneous and whimsical, but you also have to have someone who is grounded and logical.”

Clinton Brown was diplomatic and didn’t dive into specifics, but he did concede that he understands why Chris Brown returned to Rihanna. “Sometimes you just need that person who will listen to you without judging, who knows what it feels like,” he said. “If he talks to someone who’s not in the business they may not understand.”

However, his comments may be ill-timed, at least to his son’s camp. Less than a month ago, when his new single “Fine China” debuted, Chris Brown emphasized how his year of domestic counseling helped him understand the impact of his 2009 assault on Rihanna.

Still, Clinton Brown fears that their relationship could end in tragedy. “I hate to use examples, but Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse—– I mean, I could go on and on. Is that a given — that you can’t have fortune and fame without [death] being the end result?”

“[Rihanna] would make a good mom,” he added. “I think she would probably have to change some of her antics — the party attitude would probably have to change. I don’t think they would just whimsically and spontaneously have a child with them being in this mode. That’s why I don’t see it happening — but anything’s possible, man.”
