If there’s one thing we know you Idolator readers love, it’s some smash mouth sports action! Yeaargh!  Well, we’ve got the latest news for you from the gridiron (a.k.a. “football field”): Carrie Underwood will be singing the theme song for NBC’s Sunday Night Football this season. Underwood will give her take of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” in the role that was held by Faith Hill for the past six seasons.

The network is surely happy with how things worked out, as NBC Producer Fred Gaudelli said Underwood was the only performer he pursued to fill the spot, and that she was originally in the running for the gig back in 2006 (Pink got the job for that inaugural season on NBC).

Underwood sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLIV in 2010, and as for her relationship with NBC, she’s also starring in the network’s live The Sound of Music special later this year. She’ll first be seen on Sunday Night Football‘s intro video during the September 8 game when the New York Giants head to Texas to play the Dallas Cowboys.
