Carrie Underwood pops in purple on the June 2013 cover of Marie Claire. The country superstar and soon-to-be Sunday Night Football siren opened up about her family life in the latest issue. Underwood explained why having much older siblings gave her thick skin, and opened up about her perceived iciness. Head below for interview highlights and click through the sexy spread up top.

On her upbringing: “We were never a huggy family. Or a ‘let’s talk it out’ family. Technically I have siblings, but they are quite a bit older than me — I was the accident — so I have the only-child syndrome going on. I’m a little more selfish, a little more independent, a little closed [...] I’m the black sheep of the family. The black-crystal sheep. Swarovski.”

On music-as-therapy: “I don’t want to listen to everybody’s problems all the time. And I doubt anybody wants to listen to mine.”

On her tough skin: “I do wish I were softer. I wish I were able to form relationships better. But hey, I mean [...] I’m not a sociopath.”

On her favorite singers: “George Michael. Even as a three-year-old I could pick his voice out of a million. I liked Queen growing up because [Freddie Mercury] could do things I couldn’t do. Aerosmith, same thing. Martina McBride hit a lot of awesome, high, long notes.”
