Ask Embla, “Writing’s On the Wall”
Although I blurbed Ask Embla‘s amazing-but-you-can’t-listen-to-it-or-buy-it-anywhere LP Northern Light last week, it bears repeating that the Norwegian pop duo’s album is as strong and cohesive an effort as any this year: But one of my favorite tracks is “Writing’s On the Wall,” which features a soldier-like drumbeat and this gorgeous “Like the beating of a drum” riff. It’s a big, classic midtempo pop number, American in style but unmistakably Scandinavian in its sensibilities.
