J. Cole & Kendrick Lamar’s “Forbidden Fruit” Leaks: Listen

J. Cole doesn’t have many collaborations on his forthcoming album Born Sinner (out June 18), but those he has included are killer. There’s Miguel on “Power Trip,” TLC on “Crooked Smile” and now one of the most anticipated tracks, “Forbidden Fruit” with Kendrick Lamar. Cole seems like a bit of a workaholic, so it comes as no surprise that he apparently worked on this down to the wire: he raps, “I’mma drop the album same day as Kanye,” meaning he laid down this track pretty recently, as the release date change was only announced on May 20.

The song is a quiet head-bobber, and if it sounds like A Tribe Called Quest‘s ultra-chill “Electric Relaxation,” that’s because both tracks heavily sample “Mystic Brew.” K-Dot fans may be disappointed that Lamar is only on half-rapped hook duties here, but it’s kind of cool, then, that Cole really is the only person rapping on the album (the standard edition, at least). Plus, it just makes us want to hear that Cole-Kendrick joint LP even more.

Hear “Forbidden Fruit” below.
