Ciara Debuts New Song “Turnt Up”: Listen

“They get turnt up,” Ciara said at 106 & Park, as she attempted to speak over the cheering studio audience. However, in a new song off her self-titled album (out July 8), the soft-spoken R&B singer from Atlanta proves that she can, too.

Depending, “Turnt Up” may conjure up a few welcome memories for ’90s R&B fans. Its introductory soft tones recalls the gleaming harp of Brandy and Monica‘s “The Boy Is Mine,” and the rhythm of Ciara’s rapped chorus brings Kandi‘s “Don’t Think I’m Not” to mind. Fans of Aaliyah may also appreciate how Ciara’s voice writhes and wraps around the song’s backing rhythm.

But “Turnt Up” also helps to redefine the titular catchphrase, as Ciara initially did at 106 & Park. While Ciara’s hometown nightclubs would typically interpret “Turnt Up” as a cue to “Pour It Up” without abandon, Ciara’s vocals create tension so that pops of Rocko‘s “U.O.N.E.O” feels like an unexpected release, as if to build anticipation for her “Body Party” to come. Hear “Turnt Up” after the jump.
