Kelly Rowland Channels Joni Mitchell For “Gone”: Hear Her Wiz Khalifa Collaboration

It’ll be hard for Kelly Rowland to follow up all the buzz about “Dirty Laundry” and her new gig as a judge on The X Factor, but here she is with her latest salvo, “Gone.” Like “Dirty Laundry,” this Talk A Good Game track takes on relationship woes, but it’s much lighter fare. The song has a playful R&B beat that wouldn’t sound out of place on late ’90s radio, with Wiz Khalifa turning in a jilted lover’s verse.

The song’s one issue is that it interpolates Joni Mitchell‘s “Big Yellow Taxi,” and we can all agree that the last thing the world needs is another take on that tune. Thankfully it’s only here in a small dose for part of the song’s chorus, so it’s not enough to bring the whole thing down. Check it out below.

“Gone” is good but “Unity” is better – still one of Kelly Rowland’s best songs ! Check it out.

Carl, Carl, Carl. “Big Yellow Taxi” is a classic song, a household word, everybody knows it, and it will remain in the pantheon of great songs long after this piece of pleasant, but predictable morsel of R&B fluff has been swept into the dustbin of musical history along with “Sugar, Sugar” and “Rock the Boat.”

    • No, I totally agree about “Big Yellow Taxi” — I wasn’t disparaging that song, I was pointing out that the covers/homages have been done to death, and they’re (obviously) never as good as the original.
