It wouldn’t come as a surprise if Miley Cyrus‘ brilliantly weird new single “We Can’t Stop” ended up becoming her signature song — but she very nearly missed the boat on it altogether, as producer Mike Will Made It explained to MTV: He’d originally intended that the song go to Rihanna for her Unapologetic album.

“When I originally worked on ‘We Can’t Stop,'” he said, ‘we had did it for Rihanna. The idea was more towards Rihanna. And then Rihanna, she heard ‘Pour It Up,’ and then she got on ‘Pour It Up’ right away. And she didn’t even hear ‘We Can’t Stop.’ So then we finished up the record.”

But as for Miley, when she heard the track, she knew that she wanted it for herself. “I thought we were going to knock out one record, and we ended up going in, caught a good vibe, and she’s real cool, a regular person,” Mike said. “We went in, she nailed the record, and she did it with her swag. So it sounds totally different than what we originally tried to come up with.”

Your move, #navy.
