Carly Rae Jepsen is already hard at work on the follow-up to 2012’s hugely underrated Kiss and she’s promising to switch things up with an edgier sound. Canada’s greatest export since Celine Dion somewhat cryptically told Billboard her new opus will be: “a pop album, but… an album that is my own version of pop.” When pressed she named Robyn, Kimbra, La Roux and Dragonette as inspirations.

I guess that means Carly is going for  a slick synth-pop sound. But wait – there’s more. The 27-year-old will also dabble in folk. In her own words: “I think I have a folky side in my blood from what I used to listen to with my parents, and it’ll be fun to incorporate that more in the verses of the pop songs, a little something deeper to the verses.” So sleek electronic music with meaningful lyrics? Bring it on.

The patriotic diva is working with a bunch of young Canadian producers as well as hitmaker Benny Blanco and long-time collaborators Ryan Stewart (“Curiosity”) and Josh Ramsay (“Call Me Maybe”). Jepsen says she started working on the album the day Kiss was turned in and already has three songs in the bag.

What do you think of the songbird’s potential new sound? Are you ready for the second coming of Carly Rae?
