Miley Cyrus Performs “We Can’t Stop” & “Fall Down” On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’: Watch

Miley Cyrus is really on her own journey, isn’t she? Sometimes I think that the song should have been called “I Can’t Stop,” because while I’m sure there are other members of Miley’s clique who feel like they, too, struggle with stopping, the person at the crux of the inability to stop seems to be Miley herself. In fact, I’m hard pressed to think of another figure in the entertainment industry who’s less engaged with stopping. She doesn’t speak for all of us. We can stop. She really can’t, though. Not even if she wanted to.

All of that leads me to her set last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she turned out the debut live performance of her new single “We Can’t Stop,” and it was — like everything else about the single campaign — weird, messy, amazing, embarrassing, brilliant and upsetting, I think? At once hypersexualized and totally sexless in a way that’s beginning to feel deliberate? Also, I’m running out of adjectives to talk about the new Miley Cyrus era.

It’s worth noting that she did have laryngitis, which explains part of why her typically-strong vocals were strained here and there (although, all things considered, they sounded pretty good). It’s worth noting in a less salient way that after she finished “We Can’t Stop,” she brought on lowest-common-denominator club-pop gremlin Will.i.am to perform “Fall Down” with her, which is a bummer, because, well, Will.i.am is the human equivalent of one of those big corporate sponsorship decals that goes on a racecar.
