Kanye West, Yeezus Released: June 18

Kanye West has nuanced (and clever) thoughts on race, religion and sex, and an ear for subtle (and clever) sonic layering. He dispatched with all that nonsense on this bleak blast of electro rap. Not only did West out-bro rap and dubstep, but he’s outthinking them, too, offering new sonic frameworks for hip-hop and mainstream electro. The result is abrasive, confrontational, primal and outstanding. — CARL WILLIOTT
