Laura Imbruglia, What A Treat Released: June 7

If you switched on a radio in the late ’90s, chances are you heard Laura’s beautiful sister belting out “Torn” at least once. Natalie Imbruglia has since retired to a life of champagne and socializing, but her younger sibling continues to pursue the family profession — strumming her guitar in smoky pubs and clubs across Australia since 2003. Now on her third LP, Laura has finally found her voice (and the right mix of medication). I loved every second of 2010’s ironically titled The Lighter Side Of… but it could well be the most depressing album ever recorded. It’s heartening to find the talented singer-songwriter in a better place, taking a less fatalistic approach to love and life.

Laura has always been a clever wordsmith (she memorably likens an ex-lover to “a child-molesting reverend, a cactus lacking mescaline” on the title track) and her witty, literate lyrics form the backbone of What A Treat. Highlights include “Ain’t Done Yet,” a darkly humorous Dear John letter underpinned by a gorgeous Carpenters-esque melody, and “Limerence,” which examines a rare psychological condition in frank fashion. It might sound heavy-going but it’s not. “Straight To The Bar” is a perky, piano-driven ode to friendship, while “Awoooh!” delights with its rockabilly sound and quirky werewolf twist. Laura is an acquired taste but once you develop it there’s no going back. — MIKE WASS
