Lady Gaga performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” Friday at NYC Pride, while taking liberties with the National Anthem’s lyrics. Gaga has been prepping her next album ARTPOP, and her return to the public eye came after key decisions by the Supreme Court: the striking down of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which the pop star followed closely and advocated on Twitter, and the dismissal of Prop 8, allowing gay marriages to resume in California.

“It’s my LGBT fans who always said to me, ‘I knew Lady Gaga when…'” Lady Gaga said before she sang. “Well, look at who the star is now. Now, I get to say, ‘I knew you when…'” Then, as she clutched a square, rainbow-striped scarf, Lady Gaga sang with gusto. Fans cheered when she struck higher notes, then continued to raise their voices as Gaga ended her live rendition with a timely twist: “Oh say, does our star-spangled flag of pride yet wave / for the land of the free / and the home for the gay.”
