Bonnie McKee: Katy Perry’s New Songs Are “More Grown Up”

Superstar songwriter-turned-pop star in her own right Bonnie McKee went viral last week with her debut single “American Girl,” but those members of the press who don’t have the good sense to drill her for more information about her own solo career just keep on quizzing her about her work with her BFF/”soulmate” Katy Perry, so that’s what this is. It’s a Katy Perry story without much specific or useful information. That said, it’s a Katy Perry and Bonnie McKee post, and since that creative collaboration gave the world “Teenage Dream” and “Part of Me” and “California Gurls,” there’s much worth celebrating here, because those are some good songs.

So! McKee told MTV News that she and Perry were up in Santa Barbara in the studio: “We wrote three or four songs, I guess,” she said. “So I have four songs with her coming out.”

And what do these new songs sound like? It’s sort of typical vague songwriter generalities — but it sounds like, at least, Perry’s evolving artistically. “I think it’s a little bit more grown up, and it’s really interesting,” McKee said. “I’m really excited for the world to hear it because she’s just — she’s taking a new approach. And I don’t want to say too much about it, but it’s definitely different. It’s definitely a little more mature than the ‘California Gurls’ of yesterday.”

Then again, if it’s more mature than “So hot, we’ll melt your popsicle,” that might not be saying much.
