Whatcha Say: Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Avril Lavigne Got Our Readers Talking

Bianca Gracie | July 5, 2013 6:30 pm

This week was a jam-packed one, filled with tons of musical goodies including our successful Beyonce-themed Ibrawlator! Editors Sam Lanksy and Mike Wass (along with the rest of the BeyHive) took to Twitter to debate on the diva’s controversial fifth era. After much discussion, 53 percent of the Hive concluded that their Queen – err, King – is on the right track with this era.

The 2013 BET Awards took place on June 30, where Miguel, Kendrick Lamar, Robin Thicke and Ciara gave incredible performances. Speaking of Ciara, the singer had the best week ever as she heavily promoted her upcoming self-titled album by performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, dropping the video for “I’m Out” and even releasing teaser snippets for her new album tracks.

Avril Lavigne‘s “Here’s To Never Growing Up” won our Song of the Summer poll to very mixed reviews. Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z gave us some major holiday treats for the 4th of July, with Timberlake releasing the super-NSFW video for “Tunnel Vision” and the Jigga Man dropping his new album Magna Carta Holy Grail.

Check out some of this week’s best comments below!

:: When we asked what the girl in bright pink hair was thinking while shooting Lana Del Rey‘s Tropico mini-film in this week’s Caption This, Daniel T. was quick to quip: “Born too dyed.”

:: Diane Salomon Dell though Mariah Carey‘s performance was a bit half-hearted on Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Cher Perform At Macy’s 4th Of July Fireworks Show: “so what was wrong with mariahs legs last night sitting on the haystacks. strange! just saying!!”

:: Many members of the Hive didn’t mind Beyonce’s musical hiatus, including Dustin Knock who said on Ibrawlator: Beyonce- What’s Up With Her This Year?: “Like she said in ‘life is but a dream,’ all she wants to do is make music….she’s a workaholic, she loves her job….I was frustrated at first, but I’d rather have her work it out to where the next era is perfect rather than rushing it. I would be okay if she stopped here… To me she was always an icon…so there is no need for another era.. But that doesn’t mean she can’t do it”

:: Cher is unstoppable, according to tannis walsh on Cher “Woman’s World (Jason Nevins Extended Remix)”: Premiere, saying “Simply the Best song…Cher still can rock it out there …love this song …waiting to get it and cruise in my car ..as a proud Women”

:: The battle for this year’s song of the summer was at toughie, with Avril Lavigne beating out Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Daft Punk and Robin Thicke for the top spot. On Song Of The Summer 2013: Idolator Readers Choose Avril Lavigne’s “Here’s To Never Growing Up”, ptizzy was none too happy: “She’s still relevant? Knew I should have voted.”

:: Neither was se, who said about the results: “wtf? i’ve heard this song once. and turned it of. this shouldn’t even be on the list.”

:: Sean had some not-so-kind words for Bonnie McKee on Bonnie McKee Performs “American Girl” For 102.7 KIIS FM: “Terrible vocals. Her voice is so shrill. Sometimes people are better off behind the music. I think she happens to be one of them. Unfortunately, just because you’re pretty and a talented musician, doesn’t mean that you should be on stage.”

:: The comparisons between Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake are endless, and JT’s recent video is not doing him any justice. But Asha Fernanders doesn’t see the resemblance on Justin Timberlake Drops NSFW “Tunnel Vision” Video: Does It Copy “Blurred Lines”?: “Not even close to the same. This video is more artful and the movements from the dancer flow with the music in a hypnotizing way. Yes they are nude but all i can see is their rhythm.”

:: Finally, ptizzy summed up Jay-Z & Beyonce’s latest collaboration on Jay-Z’s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’: Hear Beyonce Collaboration “Part II (On The Run)” with one word: “EVERYTHING”
