Jay-Z’s ‘Magna Carta’ Has Second-Biggest Opening Of The Year, Ciara Debuts At #2

Looks like that Samsung promotion, wherein 1 million of the company’s users (who downloaded a specific app) received Jay-Z‘s Magna Carta Holy Grail for free, didn’t cut too deeply into the album’s actual first-week sales too terribly. Jay’s latest wound up selling 527,000 copies out of the gate, more than enough to land at #1 on the Billboard 200 and put it behind only Justin Timberlake‘s The 20/20 Experience as far as the year’s biggest first-week sales go. JT sold 968,000 in the spring. This now knocks Daft Punk‘s Random Access Memories, which opened with 339,0000, into third place for the year.

Meanwhile, time to send out invites for the major ragin’ body party. Ciara‘s self-titled fifth album debuts at #2 with 58,000 copies sold. It’s her highest placing on the Billboard 200 since her sophomore effort Ciara: The Evolution went in at #1 in 2006 — her only chart-topping album to date.
