One Direction’s 5 Most Irresistibly Charming Music Videos: From “One Thing” To “Best Song Ever”
Whether you’re a longtime or brand-new 1D fan (we’re looking at you, North West), there’s one essential truth we all agree on: OMG! ONE DIRECTION! AMIRITE?!
Frankly, we’re so chuffed that this cheeky quintet has conquered the world that we dare you to make it through even one of their music videos without smiling, singing along or squealing with delight.
In honor of our fave lads’ upcoming leap to the big screen in One Direction: This Is Us (in theaters August 30), we’ve rounded up 1D’s five most irresistibly charming music videos. Why five? Well, “all of them” just didn’t have the same ring to it…but let us know what you think of our selection in the comments!
Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis: you light up our world like nobody else…and that’s what makes you beautiful.
5. “One Thing” (2012)
Best YouTube Comment: “J’aime 1D, Me encanta 1D, I love 1D.”
With loving tributes to the Beatles, the Monkees and the Friends opening-credits couch, “One Thing” dares you not to sing along in suspenders. Obviously having a blast, the lads channel elder statesmen Backstreet Boys in their willingness to include their fans in the fun, but it’s the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” that comes to mind with its “best friends running mad through the streets of London” vibe. This valentine to the greatness and goofiness of Britain is so infectious that you’re forgiven for sneaking Mom’s credit card to book that trip across the pond.
4. “Live While We’re Young” (2012)
Best YouTube Comment: “I am directioner boy.”
Inspiring millions of 1D fans around the world to squeal, “Daddy, I want to go to Coachella,” the music festival feel of “Live While We’re Young” quickly takes a backseat to more of the band’s patented pratfalls. Whether they’re tumbling into lakes or straddling giant inflatable bananas, the lads effortlessly invoke the lazy spirit of summer. And while the good-natured horseplay of these teenage dreams isn’t quite as dorkily debauched as Kathy Beth Terry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” adventures, splashing around in that pool with 1D sans shirts does look awfully refreshing.
3. “Kiss You” (2013)
Best YouTube Comment: “CUTE OVERLOAD”
Arguably the most winsome video in the 1D oeuvre, the retro-licious “Kiss You” is the clip guaranteed to charm the socks (and support hose) off multiple generations. Having the time of their lives mimicking Elvis, the Beach Boys and the sailors of South Pacific, the lads ham it up in front of various green screens. So if you like your 1D sweatered and skiing or shirtless and surfing, you’re set. (Sorry, hardcore Swifties — they survive the cardboard shark attack.)
2. “One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)” (2013)
Best YouTube Comment: “Can I be in one direction?”
Proving themselves as sweet as they are sassy, the lads directed the video for their mash-up of Blondie’s “One Way or Another” and The Undertones‘ “Teenage Kicks.” In honor of Red Nose Day, they donated the money they saved to Britain’s Comic Relief. Mixing wacky behind-the-scenes video of their tour with the lads boogieing with fans around the world, including a conga line with Ghana villagers who benefited from the funds raised. Lining Debbie Harry’s wallet, wrangling a cameo from British Prime Minister David Cameron and helping raise more than 93 million pounds for charity — is there anything these lads can’t do?
1. “Best Song Ever” (2013)
Best YouTube Comment: “Can we have a moment of silence for all the directioners that died during the major hotness of this video…”
We knew they were aces at music video dress-up, but it’s a nice surprise to see 1D flexing surprisingly strong acting chops, transforming into everyone from a sexy female secretary to a swishy choreographer to Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. In the clip, the lads take over a Hollywood production office, reject a prepackaged boy band concept and lead the office staff in an exuberantly cheesy synchronized dance that ends with Mary Katherine Gallagher’s famous “Superstar!” pose. Resistance is futile to this song and video, which are so amazing that their release caused Kate Middleton to go into labor. There are no words for this charmer other than “oh oh oh” and “yeah yeah yeah,” but with pop this perfect, do you need any others?
