Lady Gaga Re-Creates ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, Or Something, In New ‘ARTPOP’ Pic

Lady Gaga‘s ARTPOP hype cycle has been strange, hasn’t it? For The Fame and The Fame Monster, self-aware hyper-celebrity was the message. With Born This Way, Gaga did the whole alien/monster transformation thing. For ARTPOP…it’s unclear what the aesthetic is. The flurry of photos and videos seem to be about stripping away the facade/glamour (via less makeup and clothing) while simultaneously focusing on synthetics (computer chips, mannequin parts). But then, the “Applause” artwork was all makeup. And just what in the living hell were those “Cake” videos?

But now, we’ve got another photo with lifeless parts and plain makeup. What is Mother Monster trying to tell us? Is she referencing the monkey scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Does the muddled “Aura”/”Burqa” demo hold the answers to this muddled phase? Does any of this even matter since we haven’t heard the first single yet? Check out the full image below and let us know what you think.
