Lady Gaga‘s “Applause” might sound like a hollow ode to fame on the first listen but that couldn’t be further from the truth according to the song’s producer DJ White Shadow. You might remember that Mother Monster became the new face of disability in February when she cancelled her Born This Way tour to have hip surgery. Well, she channeled that pain into music.

“When she wrote [“Applause”]… she was hurting that whole entire time,” the producer told MTV. “And after she figured out what it was that was hurting and figured how severe that was and had that time off, we had time to go back and like really sit around and craft and take it to the next level.” This echoes what Lady Gaga told Ryan Seacrest about her injury earlier in the week when she said: “the only thing that kept me going was the applause!”

DJ White Shadow also spoke about the clown-faced diva’s love for her Little Monsters. “She has a complete and total adoration for her fans,” he revealed. “I’ve never seen anyone in my entire life work as hard or do as much for her fans. It’s a back-and-forth thing. She does so much for them that they naturally want to do stuff for her.” So there you have it.
