A$AP Rocky Apologizes For That Awkward MTV VMA Moment: “I’m Not Homophobic At All”

Numerous times, A$AP Rocky has been asked about his stance on gay rights and equality, and he has pretty consistently toed the “it’s cool with me” line. So it wasn’t too surprising to see him at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards standing next to NBA player Jason Collins, one of the first openly gay active professional athletes in America, as Collins briefly told his coming out tale before they introduced Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to perform gay rights anthem “Same Love.”

What people didn’t expect, though, was Rocky’s awkward handling of the pairing. He was stilted and fidgety, giving weird side-eyed looks to Collins, almost as if he were mocking the speech on sexuality. And once Collins tossed it over to Rocky, the first thing the rapper did was plug his pal’s new album. Not exactly a watershed moment for tolerance in hip-hop. But! Rocky spoke with The Stashed and was very apologetic about the whole thing, and reiterated his stance on the issue.

“I’m mad that my facial expressions was like that because I’m not homophobic at all, and that whole thing just came off real homophobic,” Rocky said. “I didn’t really notice it until I got home and saw it. I apologize to Jason for that, because people was laughing and shit, and you know… I really don’t think that’s funny.”

He continued, “I saw they were making all the memes and pictures and making fun of him. There’s people out there that think I was doing that to be funny, and truthfully I got gay people in my family. I don’t give a fuck if you gay or you not, I just found it odd that MTV wanted to stand me next to this nigga when they are talking about gay people, that’s all. You know what I’m saying?”

The Harlem rapper also admitted to crying tears of happiness when A$AP Ferg‘s album dropped, so presumably he was so amped up about that LP that he rushed to plug it on the biggest stage possible, without considering how it would look paired with his bizarre behavior in that moment.
