Jessie J Says Her New Album “Isn’t Finished” For America, But Does Feature Pharrell

American fans waiting for Jessie J to release a new album will have to sit tight for a little bit longer — and it’s definitely not her fault. In a new interview, the big-voiced songbird sounded less than thrilled with the response to her new material from a mysterious “they,” who are probably her label, but maybe also her management, and maybe somebody else. Who knows!

At any rate, Jessie explains that she spent a week recording with Pharrell while putting together her new album Alive — she described the experience as “amazing” — but said the songs aren’t necessarily for the UK release of her upcoming sophomore set. “It’s more for the American version of this album,” she said. “They don’t feel it’s finished yet… So the album in America isn’t coming out at the same time as the rest of the world.” Hm.

She continued, “If it was up to me, the whole world would be getting the album at the same time, but they don’t feel it’s ready.”

Always interesting to get a look behind the curtain of how a record actually comes together — and it’s a bit maddening to hear, given that the tracklist for the English version of Alive features boldface names like Dr. Luke, Sia, Benny Blanco, Stargate, and Darkchild — but given the lackluster reception to her lead single “Wild,” it’s no surprise that the label’s looking for something that will fly on this side of the pond.
