Courtney Love Labels Katy Perry “Boring” But Approves Of Miley Cyrus’ “Hillbilly” Antics

Sep 11th, 2013 // 4 Comments

Courtney Love isn’t known for keeping her opinions to herself, so it shouldn’t come as that big a surprise that she went on a rant about pop music’s hottest divas at a recent gig in New York. “I liked Miley,” she told the crowd. “I’m gonna be honest, Katy Perry bores the fuck out of me. She’s a nice girl, she just really bores me.”

She then referred to the 20-year-old’s iconic foam finger moment at the MTV video Music Awards, saying: “You know, that hillbilly Miley Cyrus is sort of punk in a weird sex way.” Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so fair enough.

But Courtney wasn’t finished. She then dialed up the New York Post and told a Page Six columnist: “[Katy] bores me. [Miley] was at least kind of punk rock, you know? It was openly sexual . . . like dark and hillbilly and fucked up.” So there you go.

Does the Hole frontwoman have a point? Has Katy lost her edge? Is Miley a hillbilly? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

  1. Hi

Miley Cyrus is a poor performer who uses cultural appropriation to her advantage. Their was nothing new, interesting, intelligent, or artistic about her VMA performance. Rather, it was unnecessarily raunchy and made her look like a dumbass. I hate how much traction Miley is getting with her intentionally provocative music videos that exploit African-American culture or involve her simply making out with a sledgehammer or fondling a wrecking ball. None of her music videos contain much artistic integrity and are smartly exploiting America’s LOVE for sensationalism. Next.

Katy Perry has proven to be a more seasoned, and better, pop star. At least Katy can reliably sing on guaranteed pop tunes. I do agree partially with Courtney’s statement of calling Katy Perry “boring”. Katy does not seem to have covered any new ground with Roar and it’s seems that Roar was just a safe bet.

This is what I don’t get about people who whine about her performance: did you just learn about Miley Cyrus? She’s been like that for quite a while now. She’s clearly been on a “I don’t give a F” attitude for as long as I can remember now and her performance was exactly that. It wasn’t anything new, no it wasn’t. But it was a clear look at who she is as a person. If that’s what she wants to do, so be it. She probably doesn’t care that she looks like a dumbass.
Also, one seemingly disastrous performance doesn’t make her a “poor performer.” It seems like people gave up on her so quickly based on a single performance. It shouldn’t really take away from the music.
“None of her music videos contain much artistic integrity.” Do you have evidence of this? Is this based solely on your opinion? You seem to like Katy Perry because she is more of a traditional popstar. Miley Cyrus seems to be more risky and risque…maybe even tacky at times…but it seems like she’s just being who she is, at 20 years old. Just remember that at one time Christina Aguilera was being written off when “Dirrty” and her album “Stripped” came out and she was overtly sexual and always half naked in magazines and she turned out just fine. Who knows if Miley Cyrus is going to have career longevity but people seem to be responding to the music….”Wrecking Ball” is currently #1 on itunes.

    good article and thank you.

  3. I love Courtney. I love her snarly voice and I love “Violet” and I love the way SHE mixed trash and glamour (eg. in the video for “Mono”). And she’s entitled to her opinion, indeed. And I still don’t like Miley’s new image. Not because I think it’s “shocking” or “interesting” or “punk” or “controversial”, or because I have a problem with bodies or boobs or fingers or other parts of the human anatomy, I don’t think it any of these things, and and I don’t. I just think it’s boring because that kind of thing’s been done before and better: by Madonna and by Christina Aguilera and by pretty much every pop star before, and even by Courtney. I know pop stars recycle the same tropes for every new generation that comes along. That’s how pop culture works (it has a very short memory and you have to refresh it all the time). But at this point, for me, it’s not “shocking” or “interesting”, it’s boring. Maybe it simply means I’m not the target audience. I’d read the comments after Miley’s VMA performance and THEN I saw it and all it was was anti-climatic. It was like: That’s it? That’s all there is? It’s like: “Next.” It’s like why do I have to endure one more rich kid doing the same thing everyone’s done before? But my biggest qualm aout Miley is that everything she does seems forced. I’m not gonna start shouting “authenticity” because that word doesn’t mean anything. Pop stars have a public image and it’s fine by me. But I watch her and I read what she says and it all just seems so forced. Sure, rappers boat and posture and that’s part and parcel of hip-hop, and it would seem that Miley’s current image is no different. But something about Miley rubs me the wrong way. I’m sure she’s a nice kid, I just can’t get onboard with it for some reason. And I have every right to that.
