3. LIZ

Mad Decent’s LIZ shares an obsession with that bubbly, girly wave of ’90s R&B that Ariana Grande tapped into on her debut, and she wields an equally billowy falsetto. But LIZ refracts those influences into an off-kilter package that’s as likely to crib from trap as it is to channel Aaliyah and Timbaland at their weirdest. And just to drive the point home that she’s the bizarro alternative to Ariana: while Grande enlists Big Sean and Mac Miller, LIZ snags a cameo from human meme Riff Raff.

The California girl plans to close out 2013 on a big note: on October 29 she heads on tour in support of Charli XCX, plus she’ll release a new track this month and is aiming to drop an EP before the end of the year.
