Miley Cyrus Performs On ‘The Today Show,’ Talks Sinead O’Connor Feud: Watch

Miley Cyrus, the most exhausting pop star in history, stopped by The Today Show this morning to do a few things: First of all, she performed! And it was mercifully tasteful as the songbird turned out “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” as well as “Party In The USA,” which seems delightfully tame in retrospect.

The maddening thing, of course, is that she’s a commanding performer and — as with her Saturday Night Live performances — the songs get the theatrics stripped away to reveal not only the songcraft at their heart but also Cyrus’ vocals, which are twangy and emotive and eminently listenable. This, of course, is the big problem with the Bangerz era — the songs get pushed to the background as the shock value seizes the spotlight. Sigh.

She also gave a little interview to Matt Lauer where she demurred on the subject of courting controversy, explaining, “I don’t ever really plan to offend people, but sometimes that happens because I think people, they’re not open to what they don’t understand.” Okay, Miley. As for her ongoing conflict with Sinead O’Connor, she played nice, describing the fallout as “crazy”: “I think she’s an incredible artist, I think she’s an awesome songwriter, and I was really inspired by her for my ‘Wrecking Ball’ video,” she said,” which feels diplomatic if disingenuous.

The best thing that could happen at this point is for Miley to release “Adore You” as a single and for all the clanging noise of the Bangerz campaign to close quietly.
