Mary J. Blige Unveils “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” Just Because

Well, it’s October, and you know what that means: Time for recording artists to begin trotting out their holiday records! Now, coming on the ripe ol’ date of October 8, is Mary J. Blige, who already unveiled a first track from her upcoming opus (she premiered “This Christmas” way back in mid-September) and now follows it up with a version of the standard “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”

Few artists can really get away with a holiday record, but Blige’s gorgeously husky vocals, always soaked in feeling, lend themselves well to the Yuletide classic; I’m still partial to the ironic versions of the song (like Bright Eyes‘ withering rendition) but the earnestness in Blige’s cover is eminently listenable.

Hear the track below; Blige’s A Mary Christmas (yes, seriously) is out October 15.
