Vance Joy Charms The El Rey: Live Review

Vance Joy played the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles last night (October 10) and casually won the crowd over with his finely crafted tunes and earthy personality. A multi-platinum hitmaker in Australia, the Popping Up artist was in town to open for Englishman Tom Odell but proved he’s a radio hit away from being a headliner in his own right.

Opening with country-tinged “Emmylou”, Vance strummed his guitar and thoughtfully worked his way through the bittersweet love song. He is a gifted storyteller, sweeping the listener away with his richly detailed lyrics. Even more impressive was God Loves You When You’re Dancing EP highlight “From Afar”. The gloomily romantic tale of a doomed relationship resonated even more strongly live.

Next up were new tracks “Red Eye”, which Vance cheekily explained was about the flight from one side of Australia to the other, and “Wasted Time” — yet another heartstring-pulling ballad. If the rising star has a James Blunt number in his repertoire, this sentimental yet undeniably touching ditty is it. After belting out four slow tracks, the Melbourne songsmith put down his guitar and picked up a ukulele.

“Play With Fire” found the singer in a slightly more playful mood but breakthrough hit “Riptide” was the obvious crowd favorite. As he began to play the relentlessly catchy guitar pop song iPhones came out and Instagram posts started uploading — a sure sign of crowd approval. Vance and his band take a subtle approach but the simplicity and earnestness of their music is undeniable.
