Tove Lo Breaks Old Habits In New Single “Out Of Mind”: Listen

I tipped Tove Lo as the Swedish songstress to beat earlier this year when she released her debut single “Habits,” the most darkly ingenious pop tune in a long minute, and followed it up with her thrillingly euphoric Lucas Nord collaboration “Run On Love,” but her third exceptional song of the year might be her best yet: “Out Of Mind” storms and surges and throbs like a heartbeat, combining production that’s nothing short of immaculate with lyrics that are devastating in their offhand simplicity. (Her frustrated resignation when she groans “I’ll forget you, seriously” is great, but the emotion in that pre-chorus howl of “Are you kidding me?” is chill-inducing.)

It’s a cinematic anthem, perfectly suited for some big heartbreak montage, with a big, gorgeous stampeding chorus that crashes in out of nowhere. Most importantly, though, it positions Lo — who cut her teeth as a songwriter for Icona Pop and Girls Aloud before signing to Universal earlier this year — as the next great Swedish pop act in a year where Robyn and Lykke Li are both out of the game. “Out Of Mind” is “Dog Days Are Over”-level, massive-global-success-launching good. Expect it to be ubiquitous.
