Janelle Monae Performs “Dance Apocalyptic” & “Electric Lady” On ‘SNL’: Watch

Janelle Monae tore up Studio 8H tonight (October 26) for her first-ever stint as musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Monae and her Wondaland band started things with a peppy rendition of “Dance Apocalyptic,” decked out in their usual impeccably coordinated two-tone get-ups. The black-and-white aesthetic really popped on the TV screen, but even without the visual flair it was an impressive performance.

Monae was so amped up during her flailing dance that she almost knocked over her mic early on, making a quick save without missing a beat. And to finish up the song, she decided to wild out and sprint right in front of the camera. If this was your first time seeing Monae —surely lots of viewers are in that camp — it had to be pretty compelling, with her stylized, synchronized chaos making the SNL stage feel like a high-wire act for a few minutes.

So, about that Miley thing. She popped in during  for absolutely no reason at all — she just sort of appears out of thin air if you think about her, like Freddy Krueger or something — and used the platform to announce that she’s going on tour, which, duh, of course she’s going on tour, she has a new album out.
