Lady Gaga’s “Dope” Hits The Web Early: Listen

Lady Gaga has toyed with nudity — and revealed a wide range of influences, from Botticelli to Juvenile — in the months leading up to the release of new album ARTPOP. She finds yet another compelling way to strip herself down in the album’s final buzz single, “Dope.”

Like other album tracks, “Dope” is theatrical pop. Unlike those songs however, “Dope” draws all attention to Lady Gaga’s voice without traces of other genres (’80s R&B, glam rock, house, trap) interfering. To a piano and organ, she roars as she sings through her apologies — “I know I fucked up again, because I lost my only friend” — and reveals the sentiment behind the title. She isn’t pining for dope, she needs you more than dope, and she wants to make sure that listeners hear that loud and clear in this ARTPOP ballad.

Lady Gaga’s “Dope” will make its live debut at the YouTube Music Awards, tonight (November 3) at 6 p.m. EST, and premiere on YouTube tomorrow. For now, hear a stream of “Dope” after the jump.
