Emeli Sande And James Arthur Sing About Doomed Love On “Roses”: Listen To The Soulful Ballad

Emeli Sande really gets around. The in-demand Scottish diva lent her powerful pipes to recent tracks from Tinie Tempah, Rudimental and Alejandro Sanz but her latest collaboration could be her best yet. She teams up with 2012 X Factor UK winner James Arthur for “Roses” and together they deliver a heartstrings-tugging ballad for the ages.

Co-penned by Sande and produced by Naughty Boy, the smoky love song documents a doomed and destructive affair. “I could have chosen anybody but I chose you,” James begins the emotion-drenched duet before outlining why he probably made a bad decision. Emeli then comes in for the chorus, singing: “smells like roses to me, two young lovers at sea.”

There are copious lashings of strings, mournful lyrics, subtle hooks and more than enough opportunities to showcase their respective vocal chops. If this is any indication of Arthur’s debut LP, it could be well worth hunting down. Listen to “Roses” after the jump.
