The Veronicas Split From Label, Prep Independent Release For February 2014

What, exactly, has been going on with Aussie girl group The Veronicas? Nobody seems to have much idea: After their sophomore LP Hook Me Up launched them into a new tier of global success, the sisters Origliasso have only released one follow-up single (last year’s “Lolita”), which did very little on the charts in their native Oz and nothing stateside. It all suggests that they, like so many others, have been in record label limbo.

That’s confirmed with a recent post on Facebook followed by a TV appearance, where they explained that they’ve been held hostage by their label and have finally extracted themselves. “[W]e are ecstatic to announce that The Veronicas are now officially an INDEPENDENT band,” they wrote. “After 5 years of being in a ‘Warner Brothers Records Lockdown’, we are officially able to move forward RELEASING and Recording music without our past label dictating our creative journey, or withholding our musical releases + touring.”

It’s an all-too familiar story, although the particulars of the Veronicas’ struggle haven’t yet been disclosed — but still! The fact that they’re presently going the indie route is good news for fans of their polished, sharp pop — and it sounds like new tunes are only a few months away, whether they sign with another major or go it alone.

Read their full letter and watch them discuss their label drama below.
