Lily Allen Covers Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” For Commercial: Watch It

For your first new music in four years, why not record a cover of a bleary adult-contemporary pop/rock hit to be used in a TV commercial about an animated bear for a department store? Yes, that seems to be the strategy at play for Lily Allen, who unveiled a new recording for the first time since going into semi-retirement after her 2009 LP It’s Not Me, It’s You.

Today, she unveiled a cover of Keane‘s “Somewhere Only We Know” by way of a TV advert for the British department store John Lewis, who set it against a two-minute animated narrative about a bear and a hare, which is actually pretty sweet — so has motherhood softened the feisty singer-songwriter? Maybe. Probably.

Her rendition is lovely — her voice has been missed! — so maybe this is her way of easing back into the pop waters. That’ll do just fine.

Watch up top.
