One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” Gets A Classical Reworking: Watch

Had a hankering for a classical version of a One Direction song recorded by a British orchestra? You’re in luck: Children In Need, the annual charity event, has recorded orchestral versions of two of last year’s big hit singles — 1D’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and Little Mix‘s “Wings” — as performed by two of Manchester’s biggest professional orchestras as part of a girls vs. boys duel. The renditions — by the BBC Philharmonic and The Halle by BBC Radio 3 — sound positively regal, all old-fashioned pomp and circumstance, with classical singers performing vocals.

“Beautiful” is mashed up with Verdi’s “Anvil Chorus,” while “Wings” is (ingeniously) paired with Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries.” It’s an unusual and inventive way to hear the songs — but it works pretty well, all things considered.

Watch “Beautiful” up top, then see “Wings” below.
