If it ain’t broke, Colbie Caillat
isn’t looking to take off her Ron Jon beach sandal and hammer it back into place…or is she? When last we heard the Malibu lite-pop queen on the radio, she was having a sizable, Gold-certified hit with “Brighter Than The Sun,”
a co-write with Ryan Tedder
(who also produced). Caillat has teamed up with Tedder once again for “Hold On,” the lead single from her yet-to-be-titled 2014 album (out, according to a press release, in the spring), but it’s obvious from both the song’s opening synth notes and emotional vocal delivery that it’s a whole new sound for Colbie. Mainly, “Hold On” plays like a ballad reserved for straightforward pop dolls like Katy Perry
, Kelly Clarkson
or Leona Lewis
“Hold On” marks a completely different direction for Caillat, but with its oh-oh-ohs on the chorus, minimal lyrics and pleasant instrumentation, who knows — this all just might be repetitive enough to work its way into radio listeners’ brains to the point where it becomes the singer’s biggest hit to-date.
