Ed Sheeran Talks Being Sexy (Or Not) In ‘People’ Sexiest Man Alive Issue

Well! Ed Sheeran doesn’t think he’s sexy, but his fans certainly do (just watch them foam at the mouth when he starts strumming on that guitar), and so his willingness to participate in People‘s Sexiest Man Alive issue was all about that — not being sexy.

As he explained in the mag, accompanied by a rather dashing photo (where he does look quite handsome, so who knows): “One of the reasons I said yes to being in this issue is because it’s quite funny. Utterly ridiculous! I don’t think anyone sees me as a sex symbol.”

He continued:

I don’t know who the voting party are for PEOPLE, but thank you. It’s very kind. But I’m sure I’m the only person on this list who has a belly. Though I guess Austin Powers was considered a sex symbol, and we share similar physical-appearance qualities. I brush my teeth though. My other usual grooming habits are showering and a shave now and then. Sometimes I put on a suit. Or not! I get voted worst-dressed quite a lot, so I obviously don’t put much thought into it. I should probably cut down on the junk food and beer and try to have a healthier approach to life. But I won’t. I say that every year, but I like living. I like enjoying myself. I haven’t been allowed to tell anyone about being in this issue, but as soon as it’s out, I’m going to use it as a chat-up line.

Maybe there’s truth in that whole thing about how there’s nothing sexier than being yourself. (Or maybe being a global superstar who writes heartbreakingly beautiful love songs has something to do with it.)
