Remember when Lady Gaga‘s “Dope” reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 after an awards show performance and fell out of the top 50 the following week? That was an extreme example of the power of streaming in determining chart position. YouTube views, viral videos and Vevo premieres are now a major variable in landing a hit.

And when it comes to generating attention, sex is still the answer. Miley Cyrus‘ nude ride on a wrecking ball caught everyone’s attention, Robin Thicke and his scantily clad ladies helped make “Blurred Lines” the biggest hit of the veteran crooner’s career and Katy Perry‘s cleavage-showcasing jungle jaunt helped propel “Roar” to number one.

Will.i.am and Britney Spears“Scream & Shout” video punched above its weight as did One Direction‘s “Kiss You”. The big spoiler? Well, see for yourself after the jump.
