‘s first musical performance on Saturday Night Live
tonight (December 21) was 20/20 Experience — 2 Of 2
standout “Only When I Walk Away.” For the first time in quite some time, he wasn’t joined by the Tennessee Kids on stage, instead appearing in front of a massive projection of his face and surrounded by lasers. It was a strikingly modern presentation compared to the restrained retro aesthetic he’s been flaunting for the majority of the year, and it totally worked.
And then he went in the complete opposite direction for his second song, the utterly maudlin, completely flaccid album closer “Pair Of Wings.” It sounded pretty or whatever, but it was a huge letdown after the invigorating energy he brought the first time around.
