Kanye West Is Done Talking Sh*t… For Six Months

During one of his patented concert stump sessions, Kanye West laid out his New Year’s resolution to stop being a media flash point with a penchant for dispensing controversial quotes. At his December 23 Toronto concert — the final date on the Yeezus Tour — Ye claimed this “might be the last time y’all hear me talk shit for a long time. Might be another like six months. At least.” Well, it was a New Six Month resolution. At least. West added “you’re just gonna have to run back the interviews and shit if you wanna hear some realness.”

He picked an interesting forum to claim he was going to change his ways, considering the rant portion of his Yeezus shows saw Ye at his most raw and unguarded (although he’s always pretty raw and unguarded) repeatedly using the platform to rail against topics ranging from his feud with Nike, Heidi Silmane and the Grammys. He even called out his specific targets and said he’s done calling them out: “I won’t ever bring up Nike again, and the only way I’ll bring them up is in a positive light… I’ll never bring up the Grammys again in a negative light, because I actually appreciate the 21 Grammys that I did win… So I’m letting you all know that this is the last Yeezus show, and this is the last time you’ll ever hear me say [anything] negative about anyone.”

Do we want Kanye to put a muzzle on? I don’t. I watched him rant live during the Philadelphia leg of the Yeezus tour, pleading with the crowd to let him “talk his shit” about all the usual subjects. And we did, and it was everything one person can love or hate about Kanye: smart, angry, rambling, confusing, funny, somewhat offensive rich guy problems that can also, somehow, be extrapolated across the entire racial and socioeconomic spectrum. Maybe he just wants to get off on the right foot with his new sponsor Adidas so he can continue buying Kim things like this. Maybe Adidas CEO Herbert Hainer gave Ye his version of Ned Beatty’s speech in NetworkRegardless, when Kanye breaks his rant fast, we’ll all be watching.
