Jhene Aiko performed her Sail Out EP highlight “The Worst” last night (January 17) on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. There, the R&B singer proved that a hushed performance can speak volumes, particularly when silence from one bleeped line — “Don’t take this personal, but you ain’t shit” — only seemed to emphasize a harsher truth: “And you weren’t special until I made you so.”

Before it aired, Aiko’s Fallon gig had already been praised. Drake watched from backstage, then snapped her for Instagram to congratulate her. (Aiko was a featured act on his Would You Like a Tour?) Roots and resident drummer Questlove, who’s written about how he never used to listen to vocals, admitted that Aiko’s lyrics were stuck in his head. Especially after Sail Out received favorable reviews, such high-profile attention should only raise anticipation levels for Aiko’s debut album Souled Out, due May on Artium/Def Jam.
