One Direction‘s Liam Payne ranted at length on Twitter about the media attention he’s received for praising A&E’s hit reality show Duck Dynasty. For an hour or so, he directed all of his frustration toward one Mirror headline in particular: “One Direction’s Liam Payne defends ‘homophobic tweet’ Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson supporting family values.’” (It’s worth noting that The Mirror never attributes the “homophobic tweet” quote.)

“Oh my god can someone literally not be a fan [of] a show without being labeled,” Payne said. Earlier this week, Payne tweeted at Duck Dynasty‘s Willie Robertson that he had “huge love to you/your family huge respect for your business prosperities and the family values you still all behold.” His timing was unfortunate; in the January issue of GQ, Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson elaborated on what he thinks is sinful behavior: “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there.”

Payne had already addressed the ensuing headlines tactfully (“Being a fan of someones show and the way they still hold a family together doesnt mean i am ok with all they say”) before he angrily criticized the criticism. He even screencapped search results for his name, including the Mirror article. “Look at this shit I never said any [of] that write about something real for once there’s plenty of issues In the world,” he said, before he advised journalists to “Pick ur balls up off the floor.”

Was Payne right to rant? See his tweets after the jump, then weigh in at the comments below.

he was completely wrong in his statement. he tweeted support for the family values (racist and homophobic) of willie robertson. when you are a celebrity you need to chose your words carefully. if he was a fan of the show that was all he needed to say. now he puts his own beliefs into question. then instead of going on the attack he should have just sucked it up and took the criticism like a man.

I disagree, the media has taken his words out of context and is now implying that he’s homophobic.
I understand what he meant, which is showing support for a family who upholds their values even in the face of everybody saying that they’re evil.
He shouldn’t have to “man-up” for journalists taking his words and spinning them into something else.
Only one cast member of DD said something homophobic. Why does the entire show have to be punished by every politically correct person who acts like they were given the right to never be offended?

As a celebrity, Liam should have chosen his words more carefully, especially since 1D has a huge gay following, but all people see is “LIAM PAYNE IS HOMOPHOBIC, TWEETS SUPPORT FOR FELLOW HOMOPHOBES” because thats what the media is trying to turn it into.

There’s a severe misunderstanding here of what “phobia” means.

  3. Seems to me that people don’t actually understand the first amendment. This poor little rich kid surely doesn’t. No one has been arrested or criminally punished for their words. However, if you are prepared to speak out about your opinions on an issue, you must be prepared for other people’s freedom to disagree with you. I also enjoy the show, but Phil’s homophobic and racist statements had nothing to do with his constitutional rights being violated. This little boy bander knows he’s in the spotlight. Cash those checks, but deal with the scrutiny. No one is making him live in the spotlight.
