Faux Lesbian Girl Band t.A.T.u. To Reunite For The Winter Olympics In Sochi

The Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia are making headlines for all the wrong reasons (the country’s stance on gay rights, alleged animal abuse and poor living conditions for starters) but things just took an even weirder turn with news that faux lesbian girl band t.A.T.u. will be performing at the opening ceremony.

It’s an odd choice because Lena and Yulia remain sapphic icons despite the fact that they openly admit to pretending to be gay for their act. Is this Russia’s way of extending an olive branch to the gay community and thus saving face in front of the world media or just a baffling choice of entertainment? It’s probably the latter but the presence still makes a statement. Of sorts.

If nothing else, t.A.T.u. should put on a good show. Their handful of global hits (“All The Things She Said”, “Not Gonna Get Us” and “All About Us”) remain early ’00s pop classics and they proved they know how to put on a good show at Eurovision 2003, where they placed a respectable third.

Are you excited to see the band perform? Have your say in the comments below.
