Aloe Blacc broke through in a major way last year by featuring on Avicii‘s global smash “Wake Me Up.” Now he’s finally making a name for himself stateside with his breakthrough as a lead artist,”The Man.” In fact, in the video for the current Top 20 single, he’s every man — from an observer of 1960s-era war protests to a smooth lounge crooner to a peaceful member of a march for black rights.

We spoke to Blacc recently on the set of the video, and he had the following to say about the message in his uplifting, Elton John-interpolating hit: “It’s the same story I keep telling in all my songs. It’s the story of the underdog hoping for a better moment.”

Watch the video for Aloe Blacc’s “The Man” above, ahead of the March 11 release of Lift your Spirit.
