Demi Lovato Criticizes Lady Gaga’s SXSW Show: “It’s Not ‘Cool’ Or ‘Artsy’ At All”
Demi Lovato took to Twitter to criticize Lady Gaga‘s SXSW show – in particular, how featured “puke-a-rainbow” artist Millie Brown threw up on her throughout. “Sad… As if we didn’t have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already,” Lovato said. “Bottom line, it’s not ‘cool’ or ‘artsy’ at all.”
As she later explained, Lovato’s criticism stems from personal experience, having struggled with eating disorders such as bulimia. Lady Gaga would defend the vomiting during her SXSW keynote speech, though at the time, such an interpretation wasn’t even in her radar. “Sometimes things that are really, really strange and feel really wrong can really change the world,” she said.
Brown has said similar things of her work, though she’s aware of opinions like Lovato’s. “ I wanted to create something real and something I couldn’t control, tapping into primal urges,” she said. “In no way do I want to promote bulimia, but if my work evokes us to think about a disease that affects so many people in such a terrible way, then I feel it will at least be raising some awareness.”

It’s not “shade” and it’s not “hate”. But someone has to come forward and say it and I’ll take the heat for it. ✌️
